In 1809 Thomas made successful application to be excused military service on account of infirmity. The nature of his infirmatity is not listed, but this may indicate why he did not follow his fathers professions as a blacksmith but became a tailor and postmaster.

I Samuel Gwynne Subdivision Clerk of the Rape of Pevensey, in the
County of Sussex do hereby certify that Thomas Hollebone
of the Parish of Hailsham hath this day appeared before
the Deputy Lieutenants of the said Rape, to claim his Exemption from Service in
the Militia by reason of Infirmity
and which Claim of Exemption upon due Examination, was allowed by the said
Deputy Lieutenants,
